Teaching and learning

At Wilston State School, through the provision of a caring and supportive environment, we aim for students to become:

  • learners who expend effort to reach their expectations.

Our teachers work in year level teams to ensure consistency of expectations. Consistent teaching and learning practices are defined through our pedagogical framework. We prioritise teacher professional development to ensure best practice and improved outcomes for all students.

A number of specialist teachers provide lessons in the areas of:

  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Languages Other Than English (LOTE) - Japanese for years 6 and 7
  • Early Years Specialist Arts Program (Visual arts and dance)
  • Library.

Assessment and reporting

At Wilston State School, our teachers use a variety of standardised and diagnostic assessments to diagnose learning needs, determine achievement and inform teaching. Students are also assessed throughout and at the end of a unit of work to determine their overall understanding of the topic, these assessment pieces are moderated across the year level to ensure consistency. Students in years 3, 5 and 7 participate in National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

Written report cards are issued twice yearly, using a five point scale to report student achievement parent teacher interviews are offered twice yearly. A variety of assessment pieces are used to demonstrate student learning and inform end of semester reporting.

Our distinctive curriculum offerings

In addition to our core curriculum, we offer a range of programs to develop, extend and enrich the learning opportunities of our students. These programs are offered at various times and are regularly reviewed. 

  • Extensive Music Program – instrumental (strings, brass, woodwind, percussion), school band and choirs.
  • Wilston Wild Ones – demonstration skipping team. 
  • Chess club.
  • Wilston science competition.
  • Wilston speech competition.
  • Participation in International Competitions and Assessments for Schools(ICAS).
  • Active student council.
  • Links to local academies through Young Scholars and High Achievers Programs.
  • Camping Program.
  • Excursions and incursions designed to enhance classroom learning.

Information communication technologies

Students and teachers at Wilston have access to a range of information, communication technologies including, two fully equipped computer labs, an interactive table, iPads, interactive boards in most classrooms and a range of other devices and software. Teachers and students use information, communication technologies to inquire, communicate and create.
